
Today, I’m going to share the story of my freelancing journey—how I earned my first dollar online and eventually built my own web development and design agency.

## Discovering Freelancing

It all started four years ago. Back then, I was just playing around with HTML and CSS, creating simple websites and showing off to my friends. I had no clue about freelancing. One day, while scrolling through YouTube, I stumbled upon a video explaining freelancing: how you could get paid for building websites for others.

That video was a game-changer. I realized there was a world where my skills could be valuable. I was determined, excited, and ready to dive in. I started out on platforms like Fiverr and Upwork, spending an entire year messaging potential clients, sending emails, and pitching my services.

But after a year, the results were... _zero_. Zero clients. Zero money. I was frustrated and burned out. I gave up.

## Hitting Rock Bottom

After abandoning freelancing, I spent the next six to seven months playing video games, doing nothing productive. I was stuck in a rut, convinced I was done.

Then one day, as I sat on my balcony watching the sunset, something clicked. It was like one of those protagonist moments in a movie. I realized I couldn’t stop here. Giving up wasn’t the answer. I had wasted time feeling sorry for myself instead of improving my skills and focusing on what truly mattered.

## I'm protagonist

That day, I made a decision: I was going to turn my freelancing journey around. I got back to learning, but this time, I focused on modern frameworks like React.js and Next.js instead of just HTML and CSS.

I joined freelancing communities and Discord servers, posted about my services, and connected with as many people as possible. For almost a year, I hustled relentlessly, doing everything I could to get noticed.

## Landing My First Client

One day, I received a message on Discord:  
_"Hey, I like your designs and your work. Can we talk?"_

That single message changed everything. After nearly three years of struggle and self-doubt, I landed my first client. I poured my heart into the project, delivering my absolute best. The deal closed for $70—not much, but it was a start.

A few days later, the same client returned with another project. This time, I charged $100. Slowly but surely, word of mouth began to spread. I started earning $150 per project, then $1,200 over the course of a year.

## Building HextaStudio

Fast forward to today, I’m a solo entrepreneur running HextaStudio, my own web development agency. I’ve also created over 10 startup and SaaS projects. None of them have been monetized or widely recognized yet, but I’m not giving up.

I’m constantly refining my skills, shipping projects, and pushing forward because I know hard work never goes to waste.

## Lesson

If there’s one thing my journey has taught me, it’s that success doesn’t come easy. It requires time, effort, and resilience. I’ve faced countless rejections, burnouts, and self-doubts, but each struggle has made me stronger.

To anyone out there struggling with freelancing or feeling stuck, remember this: **It’s not about how many times you fail—it’s about getting back up every time. Your hard work will always pay off. Just keep going.**

Creating a custom cursor in next js website is as easy as creating a component in next js. we can create a cursor component and then import it in `_app.js` to make it globally accessible.

## Files 📂

We we'll need to create two files or maybe just one.

- `FlareCursor.js` (Main custom cursor component)
- `style.css` (It could be your own style file)
- `_app.js` (It is prebuilt file in next js)

Let's get started!

## Coding time 🚀

First of all let's create the main component,

We have successfully created the custom cursor component, now let's style it.

So we have successfully created and styled our component now let's head over to the `_app.js` to import it all.

Custom Cursor in Next.Js


If you're running blog page or website you know that adding syntax highlighting can be very tough and complex process. but fortunately I have found a way to add syntax highlighting in your `next js` blog website.

To add syntax highlighting in next js website we are gonna use library called `highlightjs`. This library supports ton of languages and themes for customizing as per your needs.

Let's get started by installing the [highlight js](https://highlightjs.org/)

## Setup

we can use yarn or npm to install this package.

npm install highlight.js
# or
yarn add highlight.js
```

After installation we import this package in our file. For me I'm gonna be using `[slug].js` which is basically dynamic page for blog posts.

```

Now we will need to import some of the required files for this package using `<script/>` tag but since we're using next js we're gonna use `next/script`.

```javascript
import Script from "next/script";
```

Now to use this feature we have to enable experimental feature in our next config file.

  experimental: {

```

We're done with config file. Now we head back to our `[slug].js` file and start using `<Script/>` tag

This is our basic setup now let's import `highlight.js` file using our `<Script/>` tag

## Importing highlight.js

## Importing stylesheet for highlighting

Now after importing `highlight.js` library we'll need to import stylesheet for highlighting. In our next js project we have a file `_document.js` we'll import this stylesheet in that page.

This is my `_document.js`, yours can be different depends on the project. We import the stylesheet inside the `Head` tag which is basically replacement of default `<head/>` to `<Head/>` by next js.

Here I have imported the stylesheet inside the `Head` tag. You can find large collection of these stylesheet [here](https://cdnjs.com/libraries/highlight.js). Just select the Asset type to `Styling` and keep experimenting with theme until you find the right one.

We're done with the `_document.js` file. let's head back to `[slug].js` and finish the final process.

Now to enable syntax highlighting for various languages we need to register those languages.

## Registering languages for highlighting

Now we register these languages. We'll need to `useEffect()` to register these language onReady.

## Final step

We have successfully registered all the languages now final step is to highlight the code. for that we'll be using `highlightAll()` function from the `hljs` means `Highlight.Js`

We'll be wrapping the `highlightAll()` function inside `useEffect()` so that it highlight only when window is loaded.

Syntax highlighting in Next Js


## Introduction

First of all let's talk what is a masonry layout. Well Masonry means "craft of building a structure with brick, stone, or similar material" - According to google definition.

Well if you ask me I'll say creating responsive and beautiful layouts in HTML with different sizes of elements.

In this article we are going to create a Image Gallery website using masonry layout which will be pretty and responsive.

## Let's get started!

Before learning to create masonry layouts let's learn how to make images responsive using CSS only.

## Making images responsive

Let's assume we have image in our website,

Now to make this image responsive we have to use only two lines of css.

  height: auto;
}
```

just by using these two CSS lines we can make every image in our responsive. No matter what device width will get the `max-width` of image will always stay `100%` and we added `height: auto` so when width changes with device width it also updates the height by itself.

## Let's create masonry layout

It's time we create masonry layout. First of all let's add some images in our HTML

Here I've added bunch of images from unsplash and all of them have different heights and widths.

Currently the images looks like this in straight line,

Now we want images to be in row and also we want them to update as the device width changes.

We want layout to look something like this,

So we'll define number of columns to display in page, Let's write some css to make things looks beautiful.

So we defined `3 columns` on page and we also gave `column-gap: 16px` so that it looks cleaner with bit of space around every `.image-card` we also added `margin: 1rem` so add some spacing around the entire container.

Let's target our `.image-card` in CSS and minor CSS.

```
